On Sierra Vista in Mountain View

After two weeks of training (oh, sorry, “orientation” because they’re not training us in anything, just orienting us) I’m really itching to get to work. On Friday I found out where I’m going to be working, building 40 in the IPlex (the four buildings in the main part of campus). Mostly Linux machines, with a few Macs and some scattered Windows laptops.

Also on Friday I ordered my two 24 inch flat panel monitors and the fancy computer I can’t tell you about. On Monday, after introducing myself, I get to set it up to work on the corporate network, editing DNS and that kind of fun stuff.

On Tuesday I was given a nickname. We were walking back from lunch in the IPlex (where there was a kind of street fair due to the big cafe being closed due to the setting up of the Google Dance), the crossing indicator was a red hand but there were no cars on that side of the street (for quite a ways) so I continued walking, when I got to the median I looked back to see everyone waiting at the curb. I urged them to continue and turned back to the other side of the street which was now filled with cars. When they were gone I continued. They all thought this was pretty funny and dubbed me Frogger, which I embraced and created an email alias (@google.com).
On Monday I will set my computer up with the hostname “splat”. In essence I’ll be frogger@splat. The other guy in our orientation that received a nickname is Pitfall, his hostname is (so he says) the-pit, thus he is pitfall@the-pit.

In other, slightly related news I got a studio apartment on Sierra Vista Ave. at Montecito Ave. in Mountain View (which is slightly ironic in that Sierra Vista literally means Mountain View). I’m not posting my real address or apartment number though since that could be used to stalk me… or at least sign me up for a bunch of unwanted mail. If you want it, email me. However, I’ve supplied the cross street here to aid you in seeing how friggen close I live to Google.

That’s all from me for now, I’ve got to load up the van with stuff and drive home to meet the cable guy.

It’s my Timey Wimey detector, goes ding when there’s stuff. ~~ The Doctor
